SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) is a public‑health model for substance use disorder that provides universal screening in medical and community settings, short motivational interventions for those identified with risky substance use and referrals to specialty treatment when needed. It’s brief (5–10 min), evidence‑based and designed to catch issues early before they worsen.

The WSHA SBIRT training videos are a resource for busy teams who need brief training. They support SBIRT in all care settings, but were designed particularly for Emergency Departments and inpatient units. We recommend SBIRT Oregon for additional resources and vignettes that focus on SBIRT in primary care settings. Some team members may need more in-depth training, especially those who are setting up SBIRT processes for the first time or providers who plan to bill for SBIRT. Please see the “Resources” section at the bottom of the page for links to additional SBIRT support.
